Dirtwater
Area
East of the Mountains
Consulting the Southeast West map the Hostler gave you.

Dirtwater is one of the towns in West of Loathing. It is the starting point of the game.

Create New Dirtwater starts out with a long line of empty lots on the right, marked by 'Lot Available' signs. If you walk in front of them, they fill about 3 or 4 screens' worth before stopping at a sign that says 'Not a lot available past this point'. The running gag involving spittoons. For West of Loathing on the Nintendo Switch, a GameFAQs message board topic titled 'Lost Dutch Oven Mine'.

The Jewel Saloon[edit | edit source]

In the saloon you can rent a room (for free!), and acquire some simple quests. Additional small rooms include the poker room, a kitchen, and a stage, where the Dirtwater band plays (although you will need to find the band members).

Dirtwater Mercantile[edit | edit source]

The shopkeep here sells many items that will be beneficial to your adventures.

Dirtwater Post Office[edit | edit source]

Here you can drop off blank postcards with the clerk in order to receive packages from your brother Rufus.

There are also several P.O Boxes that can be accessed throughout the game to retrieve quest items.

Dirtwater Jail[edit | edit source]

Dirtwater does not currently have a Sherf (or a Sheriff, for that matter). There are several bounties that you can accept. You can bring in each group of criminals either dead or alive.

Completing all 5 bounties by bringing in the thugs alive will give the Wanted: Alive achievement. Completing all 5 bounties by killing will give the Wanted: Dead achievement. Note you need Ruthless to get Wanted: Dead, but any alignment can complete Wanted: Alive.

'Empty Lot' Locations[edit | edit source]

To the right of the main buildings are several empty lots. These fill in as you find and convince possible proprietors to set up shop here.

The exact stock of each shop depends on the order in which the lots are filled. In addition to their base inventory, an existing shop gains one new item to sell depending on which shop sets up immediately next door to them.

Possible shops include:

Stripey Hat Gang

If you want to do this quest first, pick the WASTED poster on the right hand side.
Travel to Cavern Canyon and take the cavern on the left marked with a DANGER! SPIDER sign.
Opening one of the crates will trigger the spider's appearance, I chose the one marked with WEAPENS but any will work.
Exit the first cavern and enter the one in the middle using your crowbar to remove the boards. This item is available even if you skip the tutorial.
Take the passage to the right.
Look at the junk on the right, leave the junk room.
Open the door with the deadbolts.
Leave the second cavern and attempt to enter the one on the right.
You find your bounty bound in silk and offering no resistance.
Loot the bar for booze and a Jaw Harp, and free the cook in the kitchen to get a Hot Dog shop in town. Interact with the Gang to return to jail.

Potemkin Gang

A new WANTED poster is up!
Travel to the new map marker and you'll find you can't enter any of the buildings.
Go into the outhouse to the right of the town and leave through the back.
Walk down the back of the prop town to find the heavy load, it's second from the end here.
Return to the front of the town to see this corresponds to the jail.
The guy in the white hat is easiest to move, just tell him where to look for his belt buckle.
The guy in the black hat will try and block you from entering any of the buildings you click on, so click on the jail.
The woman wants you to stay away from her, so herd her like an inept sheepdog and with a bit of luck you'll have all three right where you want them!
Go to the back of the town and cut the rope holding the jail up.
Return to the front of town to find the Gang dazed, arrest them to return to town and your reward!

Black Hat Bandits

A new WANTED poster.
Head to The Old Millinery and enter the building.
Hat Room 1: It's the Black Hat.
Hat Room 2: Watch the hats, one will move occasionally.
Hat Room 3: It's the hat with the smallest divot, here it's the hat in the centre.
Hat Room 4: Wander around the room a bit and then stand still, you will hear snoring and see ZZz's appearing where the bandit has fallen asleep.
Hat Room 5: Activate the player piano next to the room and change the music until the text box asks if you can hear whistling.
Enter Hat Room 5, you will see music notes from the bandit's whistling.
Interact with the Bandits to return to town.

Gherkin Brothers

A new WANTED poster.

Go into the Cukes room.

West Of Loathing Dirtwater Band

The aim is to get all three levels equal. Pull the levers 1 and 3 until the outer levels are balanced and then use lever 2 until all three levels are equal.
Tell the ghost that you've taken care of the cucumbers and then collect his remains.
Enter the Salt room, use the three levers to change the salinity to 976.
Tell the ghost the salt is correct and collect his remains.
Enter the vinegar room.
Check the temperature.
Take a shovel if you want/need one.
Add coal to the furnace and use the bellows to raise the temperature.
Each piece of coal followed by the bellows raises the temperature a few degrees. When you get above 190 degrees, add a little coal at a time until you get a number that is a multiple of 10.
Use the steam pressure release to lower the temperature in increments of 10 until you reach 190 degrees exactly.
Speak to the ghost about the temperature of the vinegar and collect his remains.
Go to the hub room of the PIckle Factory and to the machine on the left.
Pull the Factory Activation lever and get Ghost Pickles.
Pull the Factory Activation lever and get Ghost Pickles.
Return to Dirtwater Jail and hand over the remains to claim the bounty.

House-in-the-Desert-Gang

This mission has been available from the start but I've done it last because it requires three items to complete stealthily and two can be collected in chance encounters as you travel the map.
You might have spotted Fort Alldead on the map.
If you don't already have a Skeleton Bone then enter the Barracks area, and using a needle, lockpick one of the footlockers to get one.
Be Sneaky
You encounter a doghouse, give the dog a bone.

West Of Loathing Dirtwater Poker Game

Walk to the gate, it's rusty.
Travel back to Dirtwater, go to the Dirtwater Mercantile.
Buy a lock, if you haven't found one, and a can of oil. If the shop doesn't have the item you need then sleep a night in your bed and it might spawn.
Return to The House in the Desert, oil the hinges and lock the Gang in the house.
Arrest the Gang to travel back to Dirtwater.
Dirtwater Jail is full, a bounty collector is you!
